Radio 4’s World at One

[Email dated 6th July 2018]

Hello,

I am the Planning Producer for Radio 4’s World at One programme. Ahead of a report coming out about school exclusions and Alternative Provision education, we are looking to do a piece on homeschooling and the rise in parents deciding to homeschool their children.

We would particularly like to talk to a parent (and child) who decided to homeschool their child after receiving indications the mainstream school might exclude their child. It would be an interview with our presenter Sarah Montague who has covered various stories on education with vulnerable people sensitively. Most recently she went to a PRU a few weeks ago and spoke with pupils there.

I was wondering if HEAS might be in a position to help us find a parent and child in this situation who might be willing to speak to Sarah about their experiences?

Thanks,

Documentary college project request

Hi my name is Joel Matadi, I go Newham Sixth Form College and I’m filming a documentary about home schooling. I was wondering if it is possible that me and my group can interview some people about their views and experiences on home schooling. This would be great for me and my group as we are looking for experts and possibly parents/students who are aware of this topic to share their opinions on this. Thank you for your time.

Please email Joel directly if you are interested in getting involved: Joelmatadi@hotmail.com

Request for people to help with research at Cambridge University

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am contacting you on behalf of the Autism Research Centre (ARC) at the University of Cambridge, headed by Professor Simon Baron-Cohen. The aim of the ARC is to understand the biomedical causes of autism spectrum conditions, and develop new and validated methods for assessment and intervention.

We are currently interested in recruiting additional participants for our research database. Registration is completed online and those who choose to sign up will have access to many different studies both online and in person.  Please see their flyer about the research project for adults (over 16 years old) diagnosed with autism spectrum conditions or parents of children (under 16 years old) with a diagnosis on the autism spectrum.

Some additional information –

Those who would like to register will be asked to provide some background information and can immediately take some questionnaires and psychological tests online. Participants can complete these at their leisure by logging in and out of their volunteer homepage with their chosen login details and will only need to complete them once.

We will also contact participants from time to time to tell them about new projects which might be of interest to them. The research projects carried out by the ARC are varied. Many of our research projects only involve filling in 5 minute questionnaires or doing tasks online. Some of our studies may involve being assessed by one of our team (such as brain scanning studies) or taking part in genetic studies.

All of our studies, whether psychological or biological, are carefully designed to protect participants’ confidential information and are governed by the University of Cambridge Psychology Research Ethics Committee, which approves all of our work.

We would really appreciate your support and help to advance autism research. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

With many thanks and best wishes,

Paula Smith
