The Centre is in a restored church in the centre of York, and it is a real “hands-on” experience. Many of the staff are archaeology students and they seem keen to share their knowledge with visitors. The chance to handle and identify actual finds is an experience for people of all ages who are interested in archaeology. 10% discount to all HEAS subscribers visiting on weekdays only, on production of their HEAS registration card.

JORVIK Viking Centre offers a “Time-Car” underground journey back to the age of Viking York and is on the original discovery site of the timber houses. It is a fascinating ride past street scenes of Viking life with “complementary” odours adding to the authentic feel! Attractions include the Kodak Museum (a history of photography); the Television Galleries (step behind the screen to operate a TV camera, see yourself reading the News); Action Replay theatre-in-the-museum; children’s TV gallery; historic collection of vintage TV programmes, the Animation Gallery, etc. Visits to the Museum are free but film showings on the giant IMAX cinema screen are chargeable. There is a concession available for educational group bookings for the IMAX cinema. Minimum 10 children – parents free if booked and paid for two weeks prior to visit. Contains an ‘unrivalled display of railway artefacts’ from the technical aspects including locomotives, carriages, signalling and track to a recreation of the spirit of travelling by train. New buildings now include The Works with a viewing area to watch engineers at work and The Warehouse with a collection of artefacts not seen before.
Admission is free for everyone, but please note that there will be a charge for special events. Downloadable resources and activity sheets are available from their website, lots of online archives to search as well.
